How do you taking your meal?
Are you fully concentrate?
What are you doing while eating?
Are you chatting?
Are you reading?
Are you playing games?
Are you watching TV?
Are you online?
Are you rushing?
When you are not fully focus on your meal, you might not even aware on the taste, what actually you are eating and also lack of heart of gratitude to appreciate the meal you are having.
Can you imagine how much contribution of others to give us a meal to eat?
Just think about the vegetables, who is sowing the seed? Watering? putting compost? Pluck? Washing? Cooking?
We are interdependent.
During my stay in monastery, I had every meal in silence, just focus on the meal, no other thought, bite after bite, no rushing. This way of eating can help us to taste the food, we can chew properly, we can digest better and also eat less as our brain get sufficient time to give signal that we are full. Moreover, it can also awaken our heart of gratitude to all beings who are helping to provide the meal to us.
“Silence is an empty space, space is the home of the awakened mind.” by Buddha
